Openwork heroes tackle a
gruelling ride in Cuba
The 2025 overseas cycle saw 22 cyclists from across The Openwork
Partnership complete a gruelling 400km cycle across Cuba in 6 days in
temperatures above 30 degrees, raising over £60,000 for the Openwork
Foundation. With advisers from both Openwork and 2plan, the group
included some very experienced but also some complete novice riders.
This was the 23rd year of the annual challenge and many riders return
each year to reunite with fellow cyclists to tackle challenging routes
across places such as Vietnam, Sri Lanka and this year Cuba. Starting in
Havana and finishing in Trinidad, their route took in some of the most
financially deprived, yet beautiful parts of the country and everyone
was in awe of the way Cuba has managed to survive despite its broken
economy.
There were thrills and spills along the way and the guide doctor was
called on more than once to tend to bloodied limbs, but the team, with
ages from 76 to 21 happily made it safely to the end together.
Sasha Dabliz, Marketing and Communications Director at The
Openwork Partnership commented “It was such a privilege to take
part in this extraordinary trip, and I am very proud of the whole group
who showed real grit and determination, especially riding up those
stunning but steep Cuban hills! Openwork is rightly proud of the
work the Foundation does to help charities up and down the country
for the last 44 years but it’s essential we keep fund raising to support
it.”
